Dr. Allyson Barnes, PT, DPT, MBA

Founder, Physical Therapist

Dr. Allyson Barnes brings a wealth of experience and a passion for advancing patient care. After earning a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Louisiana State University in New Orleans, Allyson has developed expertise through work in diverse clinical settings, including hypermobility care.

Professional Experience

Allyson’s career includes extensive experience in:

  • Inpatient Rehabilitation: As a member of a brain injury team, she provided specialized care for individuals managing complex neurological conditions.

  • Outpatient Orthopedics: She refined her skills in treating musculoskeletal injuries and guiding patients through recovery.

  • Pain Management: She developed innovative approaches to chronic pain treatment, improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

These experiences contribute to her specialization in hypermobility care, where she combines clinical expertise, a passion for research, and a multidisciplinary approach to meet the complex needs of patients.

In addition to her clinical work, Allyson has taken on leadership roles in professional and nonprofit spaces:

  • Co-Founder of Ascension Rotaract Network MDIO: This organization connects and empowers young professionals in Rotary International across the Central and Eastern Time Zones of the United States.

  • Policy Advocate: Collaborated with Rotary International to create policy changes that promote inclusivity and diversity.

  • National Speaker: Presented at conferences on topics such as improving inter-generational communication to enhance knowledge translation.

Research and Academic Contributions

Allyson is deeply committed to advancing the field of physical therapy through research. Her academic contributions include numerous presentations, publications, and involvement in groundbreaking studies.

    Thesis: “Gravitational Pull Does Not Explain Undershooting Target Locations in Complete Darkness”

Publications

  • “Different damping responses explain vertical endpoint error differences between visual conditions.” (2016)
    Published in Experimental Brain Research, this study examines motor control mechanisms under different visual conditions.

Research Experience

  • Served as a Research Interventionist from 2020-2022 on an NIH R01 Grant through the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, studying the effects of strength versus power training.

Beyond the Clinic

Allyson’s life outside of work reflects her dedication to excellence and creativity. Her background as a competitive swimmer for 14 years demonstrates her attention to detail and drive to challenge the status quo. On Saturdays, she can be found in purple and gold with her husband and little boy cheering for their LSU Tigers. Allyson also enjoys experimenting with traditional Creole cooking and exploring Southeast Asian cuisine. Recently, she has taken up pottery, finding joy and relaxation in working on her own pottery wheel at her home. 

Dr. Alexis Barnes, PT, DPT, WCS

Physical Therapist, Birth Doula 

Alexis Barnes received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Oklahoma and started her career as a travel PT, experiencing a variety of settings and states, prior to moving back to Oklahoma to be closer to family. She specializes in the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction for both males and females in the Oklahoma City metro area. With a distinction as one of only four Board-Certified Women’s Health Clinical Specialists (WCS) in Oklahoma, Alexis brings advanced expertise and compassionate care to her patients.

Her approach to pelvic health includes but also extends beyond common conditions like leaking and prolapse, addressing a variety of complex concerns, including:

  • Chronic Prostatitis

  • Pre- and Post-Prostatectomy Rehabilitation

  • Dyssynergic Defecation

  • Sacroiliac Joint Pain

  • Bladder Pain Syndrome

  • And much more

Alexis uses a holistic and trauma-informed approach, integrating her specialized education in birthing and peripartum conditions, autoimmune conditions, and hypermobility syndromes to deliver comprehensive, individualized care.

Professional Experience

Alexis’s clinical practice emphasizes evidence-based care and a patient-first philosophy. At BAR Therapies, she maintains a small caseload to provide one-on-one visits, ensuring personalized treatment and the ability to stay current with recent clinical research.

Her specialized care includes:

  • Peripartum and Postpartum Support: As a DONA-trained birth doula, Alexis offers holistic support for pregnant and postpartum individuals and is completing childbirth education training through Birth Arts International. She is a fierce advocate for those undergoing the life-changing experiences of pregnancy and postpartum. 

  • Male Pelvic Health: She is one of the few pelvic physical therapists in the OKC metro who treats male patients by addressing pelvic pain, incontinence, and post-surgical recovery.

  • Persistent Pain Management: Alexis develops tailored strategies to manage chronic pelvic pain, helping patients improve their quality of life.

Commitment to Research and Education

Alexis’ dedication to evidence-based practice began in her undergraduate years, where she co-authored research articles and presented findings locally and in New York City at the annual Association for Psychological Science. She was a research assistant in both undergraduate and graduate schools, firming her desire to contribute to updated findings.  She continues to advance her knowledge by attending national conferences, such as Pelvicon 2024, and conducting in-depth research reviews to stay at the forefront of pelvic health advancements.

Beyond the Clinic

Alexis balances her professional life with a variety of personal interests that reflect her creativity and drive.

  • Outdoor Enthusiast: She enjoys hiking and spending time with her family of three—soon to be four!

  • Avid Reader: Alexis is currently re-reading Sarah J. Maas’s novels (no shame) and welcomes book recommendations during visits.

  • Musical Background: A skilled flutist, she marched in her college marching band and hopes to play her flute more often to maintain her talent.

  • Movie Lover: Pride and Prejudice is her favorite movie, especially the unforgettable hand-touch scene.

Alexis is passionate about connecting with her patients, fostering an environment of trust and care while guiding them on their journey to improved health.
